A couple weeks ago, I noticed my cucumber plant was growing huge leaves and climbing well, yet something was off. The biggest leaves were turning a pale yellow, and that didn’t seem right. After a quick look online, the Internet told me it could be caused by a number of things.
Firstly, I would like to point out that we have a few heavy rainfalls in the past few weeks and my cucumber plant is most exposed as it’s bordering the balcony railing. According to Homescopes.com, excessive watering could be a culprit (isn’t it ALWAYS?). Another potential is a potassium deficiency. Luckily, there is an easy way to tackle that!
You can combat plant deficiencies easily at home by making your own vitamin water!
In a mason jar of water, simply add the peels and skins from foods that are rich in what your plant is lacking! For example, with a potassium issue, I can use excess banana peels for this hack. Seal the jar and let sit for up to 3 days until the nutrients have transferred to the water. Pour the water into the plant’s soil and let it absorb what it’s been needing!
So easy and cost-effective. No need for any chemicals or to make a trip to the garden centre.

Other common deficiencies plants can encounter, and the foods to use for this method:
Nitrogen…………………………………..Beets, Garlic, Dark Leafy Greens
Phosphorus……………………………..Sunflower & Pumpkin Seeds, Nuts, Whole Grains
Calcium……………………………………Collard Greens, Kale
Magnesium……………………………..Dark Leafy Greens, Beans
Sulphur……………………………………Garlic, Leeks, Onions
Hopefully this trick helps your plants out, let me know in the comments if you tried any of the above!
That’s so interesting and such a great tip ! How do you know what deficiency your plant has ?
